Geordie Greep- The New Sound

Label: Rough Trade
Genre: Math Rock / Jazz Pop / Prog Pop
Reviewed by: Hayden Swenson
For Fans Of: Black Midi, Frank Zappa, Steely Dan
The New Sound sees former Black Midi frontman, Geordie Greep, apply his immense musical prowess to an all-new set of influences. This album deftly explores genres such as jazz-rock, prog, and samba with bombastic, theatric flair. The instrumentation here is fantastic! With his one-of-a-kind singing voice and masterful lyricism, Greep vividly depicts narratives and characters that are at once macabre, sinister, and sexual. Track 2 stands out with its Brazillian-inspired composition. It's a shame most of this can't be played during the day!

The Smile - Cutouts album cover

The Smile- Cutouts

Label: XL Recordings
Genre: Alt Rock
Reviewed by: Keenan Hicks
For Fans Of: Radiohead, Thom Yorke
Cutouts is an eclectic mix of Thom Yorke ballads, textural chamber rock, and odd, off-kilter jams. The slower joints (2, 4, 5, 7) tend to use a lush variety of instruments to create airy, organic textures, with subtly unsettling synths creeping in from the edges. The more up tempo tracks (3, 5, 8) mix in the above instrumentation but get carried forward by the tight, robotic (positive) drumming. The strange polymeter grooves and chromatic riffs are completed by the underscoring drumbeat, chugging along with deadly precision. Unfortunately, some of the best examples are set back by FCC violations (3, 8). Overall, despite the intentional variety, it tends not to stray from the general atmosphere of natural mystique.

Lamplighter by Memorials

Memorials- Memorial Waterslide

Label: Fire
Genre: Neo-Psychedelia, Post-Folk Rock
Reviewed by: Lane Robertson
For Fans Of: MGMT, Mile High Club, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
Memorial Waterslides by Memorials is an psych-rock gem, blending the dreamy vibes of Mild High Club, and the electric allure of MGMT with noisy, sparkly sounds. The standout track, Lamplighter, is a perfect mix of joyful build-up, synth-pop, and entertaining vocals. The album strikes a balance between whimsical, edgy experimentation and moody, disruptive tracks, making it both familiar and unpredictable. Memorials’ noisy, eclectic approach elevates their sound, making Memorial Waterslides a delightful and vibrant listen for fans of good music.
