Milk Parlor 9/16/24: Smooth Brain, Laney Jones, and 1000 Bliss Show Review

written by Amir Lahoud on

Hello show goers! WUVT has no shortage of live events planned this semester, and DJ Daniel Kim has written a review of our show from The Milk Parlor* *

Smooth Brain It felt like all of blacksburg showed up on a random monday night to see WUVT's second Milk Parlor show of the semester. Up first was Smooth Brain, who performed an amazing classic rock set. Their guitarist was racking up killer guitar solos, and their drummer was keeping great tempo (And was jamming out on the cowbell). The venue was packed, and it felt like everyone was on the dancefloor. The highlight of their set was definitely their cover of Metallica's Master of Puppets. People were stacked and packed forming a moshpit and throwing elbows!

Smooth Brain

After Smooth Brain's high-octane set, Laney Jones and The Spirits put on more of a mellow and emotional show. Coming all the way from Nashville, the band gave us a breath of fresh air from a heavier sound with their Indie rock / Americana influences. Their sound was stunning, and paired very well with the guitars and bass. They performed all originals but Where is my mind by the Pixies. Laney Jones had an incredible stage presence and had the whole crowd singing to their originals. Their lead singer has incredible vocals, and you could really hear how practiced she was when they preformed an unreleased song, I Wanna Be Another Rolling Stone.

1000 Bliss was the closer, and although the crowd had thinned out, the energy was still high. They riled up a small but intense crowd, and had mosh pits going multiple times throughout the night. Both the guitarists and bassists had great stage presence, which was nice to see considering many bands forego good stage performance. With a great 'wall of sound' and good visuals, 1000 Bliss put on a great closing show.

WUVT hosted a fantastic show with three incredibly talented, yet stylistically different bands that was a total success. I love moshing personally the high octane mosh pits were my favorite moment, but there is so much to love at a venue like the Milk Parlor.
